Background

In 2009-2010, Dakota County partnered with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), the Metropolitan Council, the Federal Highway Administration, and the cities of Eagan, Inver Grove Heights, Mendota Heights and Sunfish Lake to conduct the Regional Roadway System Visioning Study in northern Dakota County. The study found a need for safety and capacity improvements to Lone Oak Road/ 70th Street (County Road 26) within the project area. These recommendations included expanding Lone Oak Road/ 70th Street West from a two-lane roadway to a divided four-lane roadway. The study also recommended realigning Argenta Trail (County Road 63) from its intersection with Yankee Doodle Road (County Road 28) to north of Amana Trail, connecting Amana Trail between realigned Argenta Trail and South Robert Trail as well as high-volume, high-capacity intersection improvements to Argenta Trail at the Highway 55 intersection with the potential for a future interchange.

As a next step, the County and City of Inver Grove Heights completed the Argenta Trail Realignment Study during fall 2014 to early 2015 to identify an alignment for Argenta Trail (County Road 63). The study recommended an alignment for Argenta Trail from south of Highway 55 to I-494, which was later adopted by both the Dakota County Board of Commissioners and the Inver Grove Heights City Council.

The County hosted several neighborhood meetings and open houses in 2017 and 2018 to share project updates and solicit input on design elements for the County Road 26 and County 63 improvements. More information from those meetings can be found on the County’s website.

Current Progress

The County and the cities of Eagan and Inver Grove Heights presented the preferred roadway concept for the County Road 26 and County Road 63 project at an open house in June 2018. The preferred concept includes shifting the County Road 26 and 63 intersection east onto the future County Road 63 (Argenta Trail) alignment and constructing a roundabout to provide improved intersection operations and increased safety along both County Roads 26 and 63.

The County is now moving into the final design of this project and construction is anticipated to begin in 2021.
